I love it. I think it is one of the best comics out in the market right now. Therefore I have always been interested in seeing his handle on superheroes in his own little universe. I have been wanting to give Invincible a shot for a while but I just haven't had the time until recently. I had heard tons of praise for the book and thought it was about time to check it out in hardcover form which collects the first couple trades of the series.
At first I was little underwhelmed. I liked what he was doing with the whole Spiderman meets the son of Superman thing and it was an interesting dynamic seeing a family so used to having a superhero for a father. But it was just kind of whatever for a little while. Until Kirkman does what he does so well and just pulls something that pulls the plot rug out from under you completely. I am not going to give it a way but a major shift happens that makes this go from "eh" to "Hey that is really interesting, I don't think I have ever seen something like that happen before." Unfortanatly that happens right at the end of the hardcover so I need to wait to the next one to find out more. I will definitly purchase the other hardcovers. It is worth it too. A couple trades for about $35.
The art was good but some things annoyed me. I don't like the way they drew noses. I love every thing else but something about noses bothered me. This isn't the first time this has happened to me either. I remember looking at John Romita Jr. art and thinking the same thing. I just am particular about noses. I also love the colors in this book. Big bright and a lot of fun.
Check it out and catch up on the trades. Apparantly it is hitting issue 50 which is supposed to be a catching on point for everyone. As for me, I am going to stick to the hardcovers.TimmyWood!http://www.blogger.com/profile/00162114622767532126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-720135583380863851.post-69225505413338102522008-03-31T18:27:00.001-07:002008-03-31T18:30:43.434-07:00How can I motivate myself to post here more often?I will tell you how! You give yourself goals and asperations. Who cares if nobody reads this blog. That's right I am going to start a new feature that I will be doing every Tuesday called Catch Up Tuesdays! We all have stacks of books to read, movies to watch. I have a large stack full of those things. Comics I bought at a quarter bin to films I own to god knows how many novels I have bought on a whim from half price books. Every Tuesday I will be reviewing one or more of those things. Depending how caught up I am. Check for the first in this series tomorrow.TimmyWood!http://www.blogger.com/profile/00162114622767532126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-720135583380863851.post-62100463899383077652008-02-18T14:04:00.001-08:002008-02-18T14:06:35.920-08:00MOVIE MARATHONTIMMY'S ALL-NITE MOVIE MARATHON 2008!

I, Timmy Wood, will choose six awesome super cool ass movies and show them on the night of April 19th at 8 pm until 8 am. Yeah I like the character and I enjoy him in other books but I never feel the need to pick this up because he seems to be in every book. After a while I just get a little tired of seeing him so I rarely read this title. However I found out that Jason Aaron was writing him and I decided to give it a try.
Now if you don't know who Jason Aaron is you should. He is writing a book over at the Vertigo line that not enough people are reading called SCALPED. It's amazing. I haven't been this excited about a book since Y:The Last Man. The premise is simple, Donnie Brasco on an Indian reservation, but the book evolves into something so much more than that. I highly highly recommend it. Aaron even has a deal that if you buy the first trade and don't like it, he will buy it back from you! (http://www.scalped.info/) So you can't go wrong. Everyone go out and buy the first two trades and then the last two single issues and you will be caught up. Do it's worth it.
Back to Wolverine. This was great. We have Wolverine hunting Mystique because she apparantly betrayed the X-men somehow (I didn't read the messiah Complex crossover so I don't know but I don't think it is necessary.) Cyclpos orderes Wolverine to find her and to bring her back if he can but he doesn't want her breathing. Then we get a nice little backstory of how Mystique and Wolverine first met going along with the plot as well. Through in an awesome ending (which I should have saw coming due to the nature of these characters) and this is one solid book.

FANTASTIC FOUR #554
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK7GEFBW9Fi_rmK57A6IYLAm-RZg-FS11xPx3gtO7r0k5BP2jXFBfwTDxmFYd4yp3eFBDkxbQJDJTDrEvvfdFT2IOeHqE7nrZpFK2nXzv2N3tKYsFxCz47SqMZwQX5nX-BZUrkWaMIxS6-/s320/FF554.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5167979549563720194" />

I haven't picked up this book since the Waid/Weringo run way back when and I almost didn't pick this up, but I figured well everyone is going to be talking about it. I will give the first issue a shot.
The new superstar creative team is, as I am sure you might have heard Mark Millar and Brian Hitch. I really enjoyed the Ultimates 1 and 2 and I like Hitches art. Whatever you want to say about the major delays that those books had, which sucked I know, that was still a fun book. However I have a little thing about Millar. I love him whenever he handles characters that aren't in the main universe. He has a little more freedom and can make them do things that they normally couldn't do in the main universe. That is why Ultimates and Superman: Red Son are so good. Whenever he is the main universe it just doesn't work for me as much. Which is why I didn't care for CIVIL WAR. If that book took place in the Ultimate Universe it would have made complete sense and nothing would have seemed out of character. This Fantastic Four was a lot of fun and I didn't feel that way. Ben and Reed worked really well off each other and it felt like a fun Sci-fi adventure book which is want this book needs to be. I think I will stick on this title for a little longer.

THE WALKING DEAD #46
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBBzzFzvdbssm9r4MvWWYWgHTTMjzDCEj_YMMLX_ndJR2sRcOQPZofdouReJJDA8F4qLiy1LZveC725GPkXQiKQvt8TQQbNQz6lf4sXB6Km2rl6VBWbmMRu66cLKzUo3H4LXrKv1suap13/s320/walkingdead.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5167980163744043538" />

Again Kirkman proves that he will kill anyone and no one is safe in this book. This book feels dangerouse when I read it. I can't explain it. I never know what Kirkman is going to do in the next issue.

Those were the awesome comics of last week. I just recently started to discover some of his great characters like Howard the Duck and Man-Thing. I also picked up some of his run on the Defenders which was awesome, there is a renegade elf with a gun in it and that is his name ELF WITH A GUN! He was an amazing writer and he will be missed.TimmyWood!http://www.blogger.com/profile/00162114622767532126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-720135583380863851.post-3517314780505780212008-01-31T10:20:00.000-08:002008-01-31T10:34:49.271-08:00Man Captain America is Awesome but.....<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNczg9-CD1sv4-vjSc4KrsWuAkiCGMBIQ8LbUdNFz8muvizr-3aqQausaiJAm1eo01Ux8FPJhoozW7IZAMmJrT0TPgkmQh2n1rhiIHKhE27BEim-Tpw850Jg_UijfUfScAUSv0bTObUKXz/s320/Y.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161710930358554402" />
The Last Issue of Y: The Last Man came out yesterday.
Now Y was the comic that got me back into comics. I was in college I hadn't read comics in years. Even as a kid I wasn't really allowed to read comics I had to read my friends copies. One day I as I drove home from my freshman level courses at the good old University of Houston I started thinking about comics and how much I used to love reading them. I found a comic shop that was close to my neighborhood and I pulled in. I told the guy working there and he recomennded a few things. I went to the wall and just grabbed some stuff that I thought I might like or whatever. I picked up Y: the Last man, Sleeper, Ultimate Spider-Man, Green Lantern, and Detective Comics. Of all those Y and Sleeper hit me the most. I was blown away. i had never read anything like it. From that day on I was addicked to comics and now spend way too much on them.

This last issue was a really great way to end the series. It was emotional and ended in a completely unexpected way. It wasn't like a twist ending or anything but it really cuts back to the Sci-fi roots of the series. Y the last man is a Sci-fi book but it was so good that you forgot that it fits in that genre. Lost also falls under the same catagory. This issue really reminds you that and also is a great bookend to the series.
Brian K. Vaughn. I love you. Thanks so much for doing such a quality series. I hope whatever you have in the future is super succesful as well.TimmyWood!http://www.blogger.com/profile/00162114622767532126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-720135583380863851.post-8443296120023445032007-09-21T17:37:00.000-07:002007-09-21T18:59:27.524-07:00The week of 9-19-07Before we talk about the books I would like to introduce the person I am reviewing them with.
Hi. I'm Timmy's evil twin. Complete with the moustache and everything.
That's right.

Let's talk about some books!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYT5jnQNskpyv8r334FfslnGJtPpcMKjJj2DXA1_RBw9xTYw10I6QlxxM9v0jjjrd2iPkPfmlybW_8JtiYtR0P2zBFYarQL2VSjXoM74XJlflg86qWZ4QXdtlc2nQFbKrdu194f-wD09ca/s320/Capt30_SM.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5112823470615390466" />
CAPTAIN AMERICA #30
Ed Brubaker
Steve Epting
Mike Perkins
Frank D'Armata
I can't tell you enough how much I love this book. Brubaker is possibly one of the best writers out there today and every issue has had amazing surprises.
That's true, yet having not read this until issue #25, I'm enjoying it but feel like I should be enjoying it more. I feel like I missed some stuff really important in those first 25 issues....Well you know Bucky came back right.
Yeah I know that. He is the Winter Soldier and was trained by the soviets or brainwashed or whatever. However it doesn't something good becuase it makes me want to go back and read those old trades...
Or that awesome Omnibus that just came out.
Yeah I would love that. The trades might be cheaper.
Well let's talk about the art in this book. I really like the switch of artist on this book.
Yeah me too. Which one is Epting and which is Perkins though?<
ummm...I think that Epting is the grittier stuff and perkins is the other one..I think. I am almost positive. I'll look it up. I love this book. It is some of the best writing from Brubaker that I have seen since Sleeper.
No, Criminal is the best thing he has written since Sleeper.<
Good point. This is the best stuff he has done in either the Marvel or DC universe.
strong>You like this better than Daredevil?
Yeah

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz5iEx2UTs5k7I3b4iRycIdNnAgCG-AScBivkUwukiYx5T8OVy-qh0YY0L2aPM96Y8fzCpQZ5LFO8WpSekb7Kv1cXl0jS5tAG_cmqONlDzGRoajEm9ZUoez2drtPRedAMo_5EOPLLmeA7B/s320/gabcws.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5112826391193151762" />
GREEN ARROW BLACK CANARY WEDDING SPECIAL
Judd Winick
Amanda Connor
I didn't care for this book as much as others did.
Me either.
I really wanted to too. I love weddings even in comics.
You do love weddings don't you.
Love them. I just kind of..I don't know. the majority of this issue doesn't happen at the wedding.
You wanted it to be the wedding the entire issue?
No,no,no, It's just we get more of the bachelor/bachelorette party which we have seen already in the JLA Wedding Special and Countdown. Then we finally get to the wedding. ALl the dialouge could have been done at the wedding and it just felt a little forced to me.
That didn't bother me so much. I know people love Amanda Connor's art but I am not one of them.
I like her art sometimes. Like I like the way that she draws Green Arrow and I like her women too, the other characters like Superman and ......
She makes them look like the Tonka Toy cartoons!
That's funny. Superman does look like he should drive a dump drunk. She is a good artist just I don't neccesarly like her Superman. She's kind of cute though.
You know she is married to Jimmy Palimotti right?
Oh really! Never mind then...um Judd Winick..ehh.
Yeah I am not a Winick hater but I don't love him either
Yeah me too. I will read a book that he writes but I won't pick up a book becuase he wrote it.
Yeah, I did like the way he wrote Deathstroke though.
Yeah me too. He was like an older brother or something. "You want to crash this wedding and attack all these superheroes...ehhhh..OH OK."

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4OwVjH9mL7WvW-elc36n82irOuESM449mX9YFtPsSUpi7lYG_xGsLXSjgNnTpSxq7er48rEU0DPZWy10Vnr2f9b7tixhBWQbiDH8B__liDnti7v5-jrYasuegrvmHB0fwBDMxdscEfoRt/s320/WWH4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5112831386240117026" />
WORLD WAR HULK #4
Greg Pak
John Romita Jr.
Klaus Janson
Christina Strain
Man. So we have hit issue four out of five and...
The Sentry finally got off the couch!
Yes he finally got off the couch. I am kind of just ready for this series to end.
You are not enjoying it?
I don't know. The first issue was fun and then from then on I feel like it hasn't done anything. Also this has also been the most repitive mini series that I have ever read. That's why I don't feel like it is going anywhere. Every five minutes we are reminded why the Hulk is angry and that it is the angriest he has ever been and that makes him the strongeest he has ever been and that he is especialley angry at Black Bolt, Dr. Strange, Mr. Fantastic and Iron Man and that the Sentry is the only one who cane stop him AND that the Sentry is an agoraphobic that is scared to leave his house. Just get to the damn point already. I mean we have seen it a mile away that the Sentry is going to defeat the Hulk did they have to be so obviouse about it?
You know what would be awesome is if in the beggining of the next issue, which is the last, the Sentry comes in to defeat the Hulk but freaks out and becomes...what's his alter ego villian.?
The void
Yeah and he somehow teams up with hulk and they destroy the entire universe.
That would be cool becuase it wouldn't be so predictable. What they would do instead is Hulk would defeat the void and become a redeemed hero again.
Oh crap, I bet they are going to do that.strong>
Well at least that would be better than the Sentry saving the day. Whatever this could have been a three issue mini easily. My other problem is when is this taking place.
Well that's a complaint with the whole marvel universe right now, when is New Avengers taking place when is Mighty Avengers taking place when is Captain America taking place.
I don't think anyone knows.

Here some other quick reviews this week
GUTSVILLE #2
This series is awesome, strange but awesome. If you can find the first issue(good luck I couldn't) pick it up along with this...
or wait for the trade that's what I'm doing.
It's about this ship that was swallowed by some Leviathan of some sort in the 1800's and generations and generations have gone by in the belly of this beast. It's pretty interesting, the art is amazing and it comes with extras in the back.
Frazer Irving is awesome. I loved his stuff on Klarion the Witch Bo
Me too. Pick it up at least for the art.

TALES FROM THE SINESTRO CORPS: PARALLAX
On of the four one shots tied in to the Sinestro Corp event.
I didn't like it, but then again I don't like Kyle Rayner.<
See I kind of like Kyle Rayner and I didn't really like this issue that much either. It wasn't bad but wasn't great either.
Yeah that's how I feel about Kyle Rayner.

THE FLASH #232
I think my copy of this was missing a page.
Really that's strange. Interesting story. I wasn't super impressed but I like the kids in this book.
Yeah I was initially worried about the turn this book was taking, I didn't want it to be like a family sitcom or anything but I have come to like the idea of a Superteam that is an actuall nuclear family.
Yeah. We will see where this goes.

Was that it this week?<
Yeah it was a pretty light week. Kind of an meh week too. I did pick up the first harcover of Powers though.
You never read Powers?! Oh it's awesome. you will love it.<strong>
I am about a third of the way inand I already do. Thanks for reading. I'm Timmy
And I'm Timmy's evil twin.<
DEUCES!TimmyWood!http://www.blogger.com/profile/00162114622767532126noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-720135583380863851.post-22731233026039817302007-09-11T11:41:00.000-07:002007-09-11T21:07:19.900-07:00The very first post ever.<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg592G412py5rpOIV45OpcPHlKavBb7JU69KA_2GRjxTxxBig4LBb-UftK9eZx6xhpze3py-FidbbrleM-zuya00SQpsNhz7x382EXAU2Ali5TUVfG-hlPZDFLS_WzajqRZIY6HF3JSz0JF/s320/s37525343_31213637_3757.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5109164375453782274" />

Hi. I'm Timmy Wood. I'm a comic fan that lives in Houston. I am a writer and I do improvisational comedy. However this is not about me. This is about me reading comics.
You see I don't have many to talk about comics with. I get my fix by listening to the great amazing podcasts ,iFanboy and Around Comics, but I wanted a space on the Internet to express my views and since I don't have podcasting equipment not someone to join the podcast with me, I thought I would do it here.

So every week I will talk about comics on this blog. They may be old comics, they may be new comics hell it might not be a review of a particular comic but just me talking about something else related.

So sit back and relax and enjoy my blog.

TimmyWood!http://www.blogger.com/profile/00162114622767532126noreply@blogger.com0
